Founder: Jordan Sale
Jordan came up with the idea for 81 Cents after a friend, who was negotiating a job offer, asked her for advice. Since Jordan had been asked to assist in similar situations before, she decided post an offer on Facebook to help friends looking for input on compensation discussions. She started charging a small amount in exchange for her feedback, and quickly realized that there was an opportunity to create a business out of helping young women navigate job offers, raises, and promotions. With that, 81 Cents (named after the 81 cents that women make on average to every dollar a man earns) was born.
81 Cents provides women with crowdsourced job offer and compensation reviews. The customer gives relevant information, such as professional background, degrees, and offer details to 81 Cents, and the information is put in front of a group of hiring managers, recruiters, and professionals, who review the package, weigh in on the fairness of the offer, and offer advice on how the woman should go about the negotiation process. This information is then collected and presented to the customer by way of a comprehensive report. Some of the reviewers also offer to connect with the customer directly to provide one-on-one support and set them up for success in their upcoming negotiation.
“We’re helping women become more confident so they can advocate for themselves and reach higher levels of success, and help close the wage gap one negotiation at a time.” - Jordan
